Opening up new bus routes in Dublin to competition would prevent the choose of industrial action that has seen 60,000 commuters deprived of bus services in the last week according to book Gael Dublin West TD and Enterprise Spokesman Leo Varadkar TD.
"This week's Dublin Bus strike has had a massive impact on 60,000 people in north and west Dublin. Commuters were left without buses to get to work and there was a significant cost to businesses in the area including my own constituency.
"There is a clear demand for the cross-town two routes at the centre of the bus dispute. But the bus touch was inevitable given that Dublin Bus has a de facto monopoly of the market with all the attendant industrial relations problems.
"The bus touch could undergo been avoided if the bus market had been opened up to competition. In request to prevent industrial challenge breaking out whenever new routes are proposed it is essential that new bus routes are opened up to both the public and private sectors. This would give all parties the incentive to cerebrate on providing passengers with the best possible function.
"Fianna Fáil has abandoned any plans it had to reform the Dublin bus merchandise in the interests of passengers. In ten years of power it has done nothing to verify that passengers get the function they need and deserve. The Government has dithered on the issue for desire enough.
"book Gael has a simple plan to get Dublin moving. We want to appoint a Regulator to determine where new routes are necessary. Dublin Bus and private operators would then be allowed to bid for these new routes.
"Under the current model it can take up to three years for the Department of Transport to grant a licence for a new despatch and it can take even longer for Dublin Bus to start operating the despatch. The new routes at the centre of the bus touch were approved more than a year ago but are only new being introduced.
"Passengers have waited too desire for a truly efficient bus function in Dublin. The Fine Gael model would ensure that they do not have to act any longer."[ADVERTHERE]Related article:
